- It’s near impossible to miss because it’s 500 miles in length and parallels highway 5, the major north-south freeway in California and Oregon. The byway is just east of highway 5.

One of 42 All-American Roads, bookended by Lassen Volcanic National Park and Crater Lake National Park; the byway region has been molded by its fiery volcanic past, with soaring volcanic peaks, expansive lava flows, lava tubes, caves, spatter cones, bubbling mudpots, and steaming fumaroles.

- 1998U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater announced 33 roads in 19 states as 1998 All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways; the release's list places Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway under All-American Roads. web.archive.org
