Privacy
The Long Way has no accounts, no sign-up, no comments, and no advertising. Its pages set no cookies. Only the map stores anything in your browser, as its section below says. This notice says what a visit or a letter reveals, and to whom.
Cloudflare
Cloudflare hosts the guide. Every page, photograph, font, and script on thelongway.guide comes from Cloudflare’s servers. To deliver a page and keep attacks off the site, Cloudflare receives your IP address, your browser’s name and version, and the address of each page you ask for. It also asks your browser to report to it when a page fails to load. Cloudflare handles that data under its own privacy policy. The guide’s own code on Cloudflare keeps no log of visits.
The pages carry Cloudflare Web Analytics, a script from static.cloudflareinsights.com that reports the page you viewed, the page that sent you, your browser, and how fast the page loaded. The guide’s editor sees only totals. The script sets no cookie, and Cloudflare states that it does not fingerprint visitors.
The map
The map draws its roads, water, and place names from OpenFreeMap and its land relief from the open elevation tiles that Amazon Web Services keeps at s3.amazonaws.com. When the map is on screen, your browser asks tiles.openfreemap.org and Amazon for the squares of map in view, so they receive your IP address and the area you are looking at. The map keeps its size, the kinds you filter, and where it was for the Back button in your browser’s storage. That stays in your browser and never reaches the guide.
The small maps on the front page and in each entry are still pictures on the guide’s own server. They send nothing to anyone else.
Links out
Each entry links to the place’s own pages and its sources, and its Directions link opens Google Maps. Those sites keep their own rules. Nothing is sent to them until you follow a link.
Letters
Mail to hello@thelongway.guide passes through Cloudflare Email Routing into a mail store the guide keeps on Cloudflare. The store keeps your address, the subject, the text of the message, and when it arrived. Attachments are not kept. Replies go out through Cloudflare’s email service, and a copy stays in the same store.
The guide’s editor reads the mail, at times with the help of AI tools, and uses it only to answer you and to correct the guide. Your name and address are never printed in the guide, added to a mailing list, or sold. Letters are kept until deleted; write to the same address to have yours deleted.
