On the first weekend in October, Idaho City Days fills Main Street in Idaho City with vendor booths, food trucks, and a music stage. The town is the county seat of Boise County. It was founded in 1862 during the Boise Basin gold rush and stands at 3,944 feet on Highway 21, the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, about 40 miles northeast of Boise. Its 87-acre historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The Southwest Idaho Travel Association describes the wood and brick buildings as standing from the mid-1800s, when they were “bustling with miners, traders and others.”
Booths and beer on Main Street
The Gold Mine Hotel puts it this way: “The entirety of the town is essentially turned into a massive concert and street fair, taking advantage of the traditionally mild October weather.” The hotel’s account lists food from trucks out of the region and local beer to go with it. Local artists give live music and poetry recitals. Vendors sell art and antiques, and there are activities for children through the day. At night the crowd moves to the Gold Mine Grill and Saloon. The hotel adds that the specific attractions may change from year to year. The travel association’s list adds carnival games, tours of the historical buildings, and cider pressing.
The 2026 festival was set for Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4. The Idaho City Chamber of Commerce announced local vendors, food trucks, live music, arts and crafts, and “plenty of family fun.” Booths were placed along Main Street, and the Chamber assigned them so that obvious competitors would not stand side by side.
A bell from the Capitol
On the Saturday of the 2026 festival, Idaho’s Liberty Bell stood at 101 Main Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It arrived an hour before the booths opened. The bell is a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. It was made in 1950 for a national U.S. Treasury campaign and traveled the state before it was formally presented to the people of Idaho. In 1951 it was permanently installed at the Idaho State Capitol. After a professional restoration it went back on the road in 2026 for the America250 in Idaho initiative. Idaho City was its only scheduled stop on October 3, which allowed the four-hour visit. Mayor Ryan Heffington called it “an important piece of Idaho history right here in town.” On September 22, 2026, the Idaho World ran the story under the headline “Idaho City Days Returns with More Vendors, Family Fun and a Visit from Idaho’s Liberty Bell.”
The Chamber’s volunteers
The festival belongs to the Idaho City Chamber of Commerce. It is a member-driven, board-run nonprofit whose stated mission is to promote business and tourism in Idaho City and the Boise Basin. The same volunteers run the Chili Cook-Off, Art in the Park, and the new Gold Rush Rodeo. In July 2026 the Chamber’s president, Carter Elliott, posted a letter to the town. He wrote that the board members “also have jobs, families, businesses, and other responsibilities,” and that “we will not always get everything perfect, and there will always be things we can improve.” A separate Facebook page called Idaho City Days says it was made to promote the celebration “every year in October.” In October 2024 that page asked visitors to “Share all your Idaho City Days photos here!”
A checklist before the council
The pages on hand give no founding year. The Idaho World ran an item headed “Idaho City Days” on October 9, 2019.
On July 22, 2020, City Clerk Nancy Ptak read the city council an email from Lisa Hanson of the Chamber about Idaho City Days, planned for October 3–4, 2020. The Chamber was moving forward but had until mid-August to decide whether the event would go on, and it asked the council for input. The minutes record that none was given.
The next summer the Chamber returned with more. On August 11, 2021, Michelle Audette presented the event checklist for October 1, 2, and 3, 2021. In the minutes’ words, the event would be “pretty much the same as last year, but with additional events and more vendors.” Sixty vendors had signed on, paying $1,494 in fees. Parking and shuttle service were still being finished, and the Chamber hoped the city would pay for the portable toilets out of the extra vendor fees. Friday would go to setting up and to warning late-night parkers not to stay overnight. The festival itself would run Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday, then Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Police Chief Mark Otter agreed to the hours. Councilman Tom Secor moved to approve the checklist, HD Hillyard seconded, and the vote was four ayes. Ken Everhart then moved the alcohol variance for the same hours, and it passed the same way. The mayor and council thanked Audette for the Chamber’s work on “an event that has continued to grow and improve every year.”
By 2026 the posted Saturday hours ended at 6 p.m. The vendor rules asked booths to stay open until 7 and encouraged them to stay open as late as they wished on Saturday night.
