The Fourth of July in Crescent City starts the evening before. On July 3 the celebration opens with a Deck Party from 5 to 8 p.m., with live music and drinks. The visitor bureau’s 2024 listing placed it at the Cultural Center at the Elk Valley Casino stage. In 2026 the Cultural Center was under construction, so the party moved to the Clock Tower Parking Lot at 3rd and K streets.

Balloons at seven, the parade at ten

On the morning of July 4, free hot air balloon rides offered by RE/MAX go up at 7. Parade entries gather at H and 9th streets from 8:30. At 10 the parade moves through downtown, down H Street to 3rd, over to K, and on to Front Street. Local sponsors pay for it, so it costs nothing to enter or to watch. The entries include:

  • marching bands, fire trucks, police and sheriff’s units, and military entries
  • horses, bicycles, and children 12 and under
  • business and nonprofit floats
  • cars and trucks, judged in two classes split at the 1970 model year

Entries keep moving and stop only briefly before the judging stand. Prizes there run from Best Animal Entry to Best Wow Factor.

Spectators along the curb get candy by hand, because walkers pass it out along the sidewalks and nothing is thrown from vehicles. One block of the route is a quiet zone for noise-sensitive spectators. Entries turn off sirens, music, horns, and muskets at 3rd Street and start again at the post office. Chamber Executive Director Cindy Vosburg’s 2026 letter places that block on K Street, while the 2026 entry form names H Street between 3rd and 2nd.

At the same hour, runners in the Crescent City 4th of July 5K Run or Walk set off from a turnout on Pebble Beach Drive. The race is USATF-sanctioned and put on by Redwood Wild River Run. The visitor bureau places the start at the first turnout south of Washington Boulevard, and the Redwood Voice places it at the northern end of the drive. The course is mostly flat and paved, with slight grades. Racers join the parade route and finish at Beachfront Park.

Beachfront Park and the sand at dusk

Beachfront Park, at 1001 Front Street, holds the rest of the day: live music, food, a beer garden, arts and crafts, merchandise, and vendors. Cow Chip Bingo is on the program. In 2026 the festival also held a Fireman Water Ball Challenge on Play Street.

The fireworks start at dusk. Lucky 7 Casino & Hotel provides them, and the visitor bureau bills the display as the largest on California’s North Coast. The shells go up over Battery Point Lighthouse and can be seen from every beach in town. The bureau’s advice is to settle in before dark and spread a blanket on the sand.

Getting back to 101

Leaving takes longer. “The traffic is a mess,” Harbor Commissioner Gerhard Weber said at a Crescent City Harbor District meeting in June 2026, describing the crowd’s exit onto U.S. 101. He reported that the California Highway Patrol would put two officers in the area to direct traffic. The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office would be stationed on the beach side near Anchor Way and U.S. 101. Harbormaster Mike Rademaker said the district was working to hire four people to handle holiday parking. He was reaching out to the local Boy Scouts and to New Dawn Support Services, which helps people with developmental disabilities.

The sheriff’s office and the Crescent City Police Department have also kept up a crackdown on illegal fireworks. It followed an explosion on South Beach that sent 14 people to the hospital, which the Redwood Voice, writing in June 2026, placed two years earlier.

A float of names from 1954

The 2026 parade marked the 250th anniversary of the United States. Valerie Starkey is the Del Norte County District 2 supervisor who heads the Chamber’s Fourth of July committee, and she still remembers the Bicentennial at Beachfront Park. “Two hundred and fifty years — that’s a huge milestone for this country,” she told the Redwood Voice. Instead of asking the community to select a theme, her committee chose “Del Norte Through the Decades.” In Starkey’s words, it recognized “the decades that we’ve been a community together.” Each entry portrayed a decade of its choosing.

The grand marshals were at the center of the theme. Chamber Assistant Michelle Radison, a member of the Del Norte Historical Society, helped research the full list. “It’s just so interesting to see what they contributed to the community,” Starkey said. A float carried the name of every grand marshal from 1954 on, and Starkey compared it to the Vietnam War Memorial wall. It was to be displayed at Beachfront Park afterward. Every living past grand marshal was invited to serve again. By mid-June Starkey had found seven, who were to ride behind the float in individual cars.

Some of the names on that float belong to groups:

  • In 1976 the honor went to veterans.
  • In 2004 the county honored veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • In 2021 it honored the public health nurses and emergency personnel of the local COVID-19 response, among them the people who gave out vaccines.

For 2026 Starkey asked the public health department to gather a group, and Iraq and Afghanistan veterans were offered a place in a car. “We’re doing the best we can in order to do those groupings,” she said.

The route itself nearly changed that year. Construction on Front Street was to send the parade another way, but materials were delayed and the procession kept its usual course. The parade’s past is kept in pictures as well as names: for the 1998 parade, members of the Crescent City Emblem Club wrapped themselves in the flag, and the photograph ran on the front page of the Triplicate. The next edition is listed for July 3 and 4, 2027.
