Sellers start pulling onto the grounds behind the VFW hall at 4651 South Homestead Road in Pahrump at first light every Saturday, all year. No one reserves a space. A vehicle rolls in, someone shows it to a spot, and the seller sets out the goods on tables brought from home. Buyers walk in free. The meet’s own notices list what turns up: “New, used, collectible, practical, impractical, antique,” along with household goods, furniture, sporting goods, knickknacks, crafts, and what one 2019 post called “the bizarre.” “What you’ll find changes every week,” the same post said.
The heat decides when the day ends. Posts in 2018 and 2019 gave the closing time as 2 p.m. Summer notices moved it to about 1 p.m., and in August 2018 to about noon, “during the hot month of August.” “Those heartier hang a little longer,” a June 2018 post allowed. The Pahrump Valley Times events calendar for October 2023 listed the hours as 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and repeated the meet’s own rule: open “until it gets too warm, or as weather permits.” A September 2026 notice in the Over the Hump Saver gives the same hours under another name, the VFW Post 10054 Open Air Swap Meet, “Pahrump’s Largest • Pahrump’s Best.”
The bread stall at the gate
The first booth inside the gate is Dale Jean’s Hot Bread kitchen, and it also serves as the meet’s office. Posts from 2018 and 2019 sent arriving sellers there to be placed and to pay. In October 2021 the page named the pair behind the stall, Don and Dale: “They run the show.” The same post warned that messages on the page might stop because the third party who ran it had fallen ill. It sent questions to the bread stall or to the VFW.
In the summer of 2018 the meet ran a raffle. A shopper who spent $5 with any vendor got a ticket and a chance to spin a wheel of fortune for a free lunch inside the hall, “open to the public in air conditioned comfort.” Drawings were held at 10 and 11 a.m. Late in the year the posts turned to Christmas. They promoted Small Business Saturday, the day after Black Friday, and urged shoppers to “Avoid the Mall and big box store crowds.” A September 2018 post invited visitors to make a day of it in Pahrump, “just a stones throw from Death Valley.”
The meet stopped in the spring of 2020. On May 9 of that year the page announced, “We have approval to re open Saturday May 16th!” By that October it reported it was again open every Saturday, all year.
Gravel on the north side
The swap meet grounds lie north of the hall. In late 2020 the post cleared the land around them for a gravel lot. The Pahrump Valley Times reported the ground had once been covered in “poof dirt and weeds.” “As you can tell as you roll past, we are also expanding our parking lot on the north side of the fence,” post commander Marty Aguiar told the paper in December 2020. Type II gravel was to be laid and compacted, adding 1.75 acres of parking that wraps around the market grounds. In the same week, crews paved a small area near the front entrance for motorcycles and handicap parking.
Post 10054 on Homestead Road
The hall belongs to Clyde E. Newman Jr. VFW Post 10054. Bar Rescue Updates, a fan site that follows the television series, gives the post’s opening year as 1979. The post’s website, archived in early 2025, describes a covered patio with a mist system, horseshoe pits, a pool table, and darts. Its weekly schedule includes Taco Tuesday, Italian Night, Friday dinners, and Sunday breakfast.
In April 2021 the series Bar Rescue, with Jon Taffer and 3 Ball Productions, remodeled the hall. According to the fan site, Aguiar said the pandemic had hit the post hard. His wife was facing cancer, and he would soon step aside to help her. Afterward the post wrote that its members had put in “10-12 hour days plus working or doing our daily routines.” It thanked Aguiar “for championing the post to the producers.” The episode was season 8, episode 8. Aguiar said he would step down as commander in June 2022, and the post’s 2023–2024 officer roster names Mark Sansom as commander.
One review the fan site collected after the makeover described the Sunday breakfast: tender steak, eggs, O’Brien potatoes with gravy and toast, “all for $9!!!!!”
