Getting there
Traveling on Interstate 90 take Exit 16 at Haugan, Montana. At the stop sign head north to the frontage road. At the frontage road turn right and take the first left, crossing the cattle guard.
Access
Drive-in vehicle access; four-wheel drive recommended in winter. Locked facility; key code sent in reservation confirmation email unlocks lock box in entry way. Smoking and pets prohibited inside. Avalanche danger in the area. Guests bring own bedding, towels, soap, toilet paper, and other necessities. On-site dumpsters are available for cabin rental users.

Notable Events

  1. 1908Workers began preparing the seed beds in 1908 by clearing 7,920 square feet of land and planting western white pine and ponderosa pine. npgallery.nps.gov
  2. 1910This first Nursery was destroyed in the Great Fire of August, 1910. Reconstruction of the Nursery started that fall and by winter an office/residence was completed and ready for occupation. npgallery.nps.gov
  3. 1916By 1916, Savenac shipped several million seedlings to the vast Northern Region. historicmt.org
  4. 1935Camp Taft, F-9, of the Civilian Conservation Corps was established across the St. Regis River on the bench above Big Creek and Company 956 moved in in 1935. npgallery.nps.gov
