On a Saturday in February at ten in the morning, spectators take their spots along Los Angeles Avenue to watch the Pioneer Day Parade pass. The Town of Wellton puts it on each year, and there is no charge to watch. For the 2026 edition, held Saturday, February 21, the town’s calendar set the route from Westside Open Space to Butterfield Park. In the town’s words the parade carries “community groups, local organizations, and festive displays.” The 2025 notice promised floats, local groups and marching bands. After the parade comes the fiesta at Butterfield Park, with food vendors, activities and entertainment.

The parade of February 24, 2024

KYMA News covered the 2024 edition, held February 24 and hosted by the town’s Parks and Recreation department. In the station’s account that parade started on Los Angeles Avenue and ran all the way to Butterfield Park and the Wellton Community Center. The theme was “Wild Wild West,” and Marjorie Rockwell served as grand marshal. The Somerton Police Department took part, and so did the Wellton Pickleball Club. At the fiesta that followed, people visited informational booths, bought food from local vendors and from vendors who had come from elsewhere, and played games. It lasted until 3:00 in the afternoon.

The town calls the parade and fiesta a “long-standing community tradition” and lists it among its annual events, alongside an old-fashioned Fourth of July and a fishing derby. None of the sources gives the year it began.

Well Town

The town’s first name came from its water. According to the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce, Wellton was founded in 1878 and was first known as Well Town, after the wells drilled to supply the railroad. The town’s own pages and the Arizona Daughters of the American Revolution say it was also a water stop for the Butterfield stage. Wellton was not incorporated until 1970, almost a century after its founding.

The town lies 29 miles east of Yuma on Interstate 8, on the far side of the Gila Mountains, among farms. The Chamber names agriculture as its primary industry. The town counts 3,197 full-time residents. By the town’s 2015 account, its RV parks fill from October through May and triple the population, so the February parade falls within the winter season.

A missing marker

The Butterfield Overland Mail carried passengers and mail by stagecoach from St. Louis to California from 1859 to 1861. Its coaches crossed the Colorado River at the Yuma crossing. The Civil War interrupted the service, and railroads later replaced the stagecoaches. On March 23, 1934, the Yuma Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a marker to the line, placed near the old Butterfield trail and later moved to Wellton. In March 2019 the society’s Maricopa Chapter verified that the marker is missing. The park where the parade ends carries the Butterfield name, and the town sends visitors who want more of the story to its Pioneer Museum.
